Many Waters is an unusual book in many ways. It's not exactly a direct continuation of Unclouded Day, although Brandon Stone (ten years older now) does play a large and crucial role in the story. Instead, this book deals largely with Lisa Stone (Brian and Brandon's half-sister) and her boyfriend Cody McGrath.
In the larger context of all the Curse-Breaker Books, Cody is the last of the five Curse-Breakers to be revealed, after Zach Trewick, Cameron Parker, and Brian and Brandon Stone.
Readers of The Last Werewolf Hunter series will recognize some of the characters, locations, and themes as they read this book. Matthieu Doucet and Layla Garza make very significant appearances, and much of the action takes place in northeast Texas. In fact, the events of Many Waters are sometimes referred to in an offhand kind of way during several conversations between Zach and Jolie in the third and fourth books of The Last Werewolf Hunter, but readers need not have read that series to enjoy this book.
Cody and Lisa, the main characters, are 21 years old and have to deal with some difficult issues of loss, grief, and the nature of evil as they struggle against the vicious witch Layla Garza, who would like nothing better than to destroy both of them. In fact, she almost succeeds on more than one occasion. In the middle of all this sorrow and danger, Cody and Lisa gradually fall in love and learn the true meaning of self-sacrifice. This strong element of romance between Cody and Lisa might possibly make the story less interesting for some younger readers, although my own middle-grade children enjoyed it.
Cody is a very musically-oriented individual, so this story is full of music, some of which can be found on the photo gallery page.
These two characters were definitely fun to write about. I like them both very much, and their story continues in Bran the Blessed. The story of their son Micah and grandson Tycho go on to form the core of the Tyke McGrath series, for those interested in the further doings of their family. This book isn't quite like my others, so I hope my readers enjoy this somewhat different offering. :)
Cody
By Lisa Marie Stone
Sometimes at night I think I dream,
Of blossoms tossed in summer breeze,
While weaved amongst my flowing hair,
Beneath the rustling white-oak trees.
I watched you gather a blade of rye,
In June all soft and palest green,
To taste the sweet and loving earth,
So fresh and cool and misty-clean.
Your skin was warm as summer hay,
The sun had kissed all golden brown,
Your touch as soft as the breeze that day,
That curled your dampened hair around.
Oh, your love was all the world to me,
And the thought that you were mine,
More beautiful then than a shining star,
When only one is in the sky.
For who could ever take your place?
And who could touch my heart so deep?
And how could I ever count the ways,
Your love has meant so much to me?
Though storms may rage and dark may fall,
And heartache come for a year and a day,
I still feel the warmth of your hand in my own,
And your love washes sorrow forever away.
Sometimes at night I think I dream,
