Description:
“There’s a thing called magnanimity, or greatness of heart, and to me it’s the most beautiful thing that ever there was. It means courage, but it’s more than that. It means to cast aside all thought of yourself for the sake of another, like Moses in Gilead or the martyrs who died with a smile on their face. In its own small way it’s a reflection of the Lord Jesus at Calvary, and therefore of God, the Light so beautiful that no one who sees it can ever turn away.”
So says Cody McGrath, and in many ways that statement is the central theme of this series; the casting away of self for love of another, the scorning of selfishness in all its forms.
These are the stories of the Stone family, Brian, Jenny, Lisa, and Brandon, and of some of the people they know and love, most notably Cody. All of them were called for great and glorious things, though sometimes only after great suffering and many mistakes.
Unclouded Day: Brian's life isn't easy. Abandoned by his father, abused by his alcoholic mother, and mocked by his classmates, his only treasures are his beloved little brother and his old guitar. This is the tale of his journey to find the Fountain of Youth, and perhaps to save the world.
Many Waters: Lisa is a small-town waitress with heavy burdens to bear. Cody is a young cowboy with big dreams and some very dangerous enemies. But when the two of them must face down an evil witch who tries to destroy their very lives, it seems that only a miracle can save them.
Bran the Blessed: Brandon hasn’t always made the right choices in life, but he’s never found himself in quite such deep trouble as this. But even though his life seems ruined forever, Bran still has a high calling to answer. . . if he can find the courage.
In My Own Words:
The Stones of Song is a very "deep" series which deals with quite a few profound questions, such as the ultimate purpose of life and what exactly our duty as Christians might be. It deals with grueling self-sacrifice and isn't afraid to approach some very harsh and difficult problems in the lives of the characters, everything from abusive relationships to family curses to drugs and alcohol and teen pregnancy. But these things are never glorified. Instead, they're depicted as sin which leads to heartache, and the only way back to joy is through the grace and love of God.
Brian is the hero of book one, with Cody and Lisa the heroes of book two, and then Brandon in book three. Cody and Lisa later go on to be important in the Tyke McGrath series along with their son Micah and grandson Tycho, and so does Brandon in a different kind of way.
